Anastasia Bay (Paris, 1988) lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. Her paintings are often in large scale, characterised by secure brushstrokes and rough drawing marks applied over colour field backgrounds. Bay depicts human figures in a way that reminds of Minoan frescos and Egyptian ceremonial images. The characters in the paintings are often in couples or the paintings themselves are presented as diptychs, revealing an interest in relationship dynamics, symmetry and balance. Bay graduated from the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and had shows at (among others) Sorry We’re Closed (Brussels, 2020), Spurs Gallery (Beijing, 2020), Brussels Gallery Weekend (2019) and Everyday Gallery (Antwerp, 2019).
